Extra Chill Fest Artist Profile: Sunny Malin

Photo: Kenzie Mackenzie

Sunny Malin is a rapper from Charleston, SC. According to his recent interview with Charleston Scene, Sunny’s affiliation with music dates back to his childhood. From a young age, he looked to music for comfort during times of trouble, and for fun during times of celebration. Later, he started writing poetry as an outlet for his creativity, and eventually decided to emulate some of his favorite rappers from the late 90s (DMX, Ludacris, etc) by turning his poetry into rap songs.

Like many modern rappers, Sunny started out by uploading tracks to Soundcloud. The first mixtape he uploaded to Soundcloud is called AV., and is a collaboration with fellow Charleston rapper Fe Lung. That was back in March of 2013, and if you follow his path until today it’s easy to see how far Sunny Malin has come.

In 2017, Sunny Malin released Malin, a full-length album and the first of his releases that can be found outside of Soundcloud. His most recent single “Collectables” puts on display the evolution of his poetic lyricism over the most crisp production of his work to date. He recently signed with our friends over at Real South Records, and we’re looking forward to what will come from that partnership in the future. Find streams of AV., Malin, and “Collectables” below.

Sunny Malin has been a staple in Charleston’s hip-hop scene for many years now, and we’re very excited to have him on the lineup for Extra Chill Fest. If you don’t already have tickets, get them here.
