Regatta (Poem) - Extra Chill

Regatta (Poem)

Two boats on a course
to collision in stormy conditions.

White cap waves rise and attack
one inexperienced skipper
who drops the tiller.

The vessels pass without control. Boom
to the head leaves a gash. Unconscious sailor
in a pool of blood and salt water.

Yellow life jacket, stained in red. Scars
are photos of a hurricane taken
with a recovered camera after
the TV flashed “severe weather”.

Panic on the beach as
mothers sprint to shore
screaming. Howling winds
as downwind boats gain speed.

A storm battered sailor
returns proudly with a pounding
headache. He crashes
through the break and
brushes off the salty blood.
