Runaway Gin – Live at 8×10 Club with Tom Marshall

With Phish on hiatus for the near future, us Phans don’t have much to look forward to from our favorite quartet in 2017. Fortunately, Charleston-grown Runaway Gin has been meshing Phish compositions with their own unique style for years, and lately they have been catching fire up and down the east coast. For music fans outside and inside Charleston, Runaway Gin is “the most active Phish cover band” and they take over the Charleston Pour House Deck FOR FREE just about every Sunday night. The Runaway Gin Sunday Phunday is always packed with Phans in the Charleston area, and they’ve even sold out a few shows outside of Charleston.

In the summer of 2015, Runaway Gin sold out the Hard Rock-Chicago for the second night of a Grateful Dead Fare Thee Well after party, and they did the same at The Rabbit Hole in Charlotte after Dead & Co’s 2016 summer tour. The band has been perfecting their transcriptions and interpretations with sit ins and collaborations from some of the best in the phamily. I had a chance to see pianist Holly Bowling sit in with the guys during September’s Phall Grand Ball at the Charleston Music Hall, and it was certainly a night to remember.

This past weekend, Runaway Gin did a quick a Mid Atlantic run with stops in Richmond and Baltimore. They sold out the Richmond show and played a memorable night in Baltimore the next. In the Baltimore crowd was Tom Marshall, long time friend of Trey Anastasio and a songwriter himself. By the second set, Marshall was on stage with Runaway Gin doing the Anastasio/Marshall original “Brian and Robert”.

With Runaway Gin gaining national recognition and east coast phans eager after a tour heavy year, the band has plenty of great shows coming up well into spring. For those of us not Superbowl Bowl Bound, next Sunday they are throwing a PHUCK The Superbowl Party at the Pour House for the usual Sunday Phunday. February 24th kicks off a two night run at the Calico Room in Wilmington, NC where they plan to play an after party for those attending the Sweetwater 420 Festival. Check out the sit in with Tom Marshall streaming below and come check out The Charleston Pour House for free shows every Sunday.
