There’s a New Record Label in Town: Real South Records

This past Saturday, D.J. Edwards of Charleston music podcast The Fringe launched Real South Records. The label is based in Charleston and has signed an array of 10 different South Carolina-based musicians: The Cherry Icees, Gomec, Hybrid Mutants, The Indoor Kids, Reuben Knights, Lewis Turn Out, Mr. Gold, Sex Wax, Silvermane, and Darby Wilcox. They have an artist sampler and some merch available for pre-order.

In addition to the exciting launch news, Real South Records has a positive and progressive mission statement:

Real South Records is dedicated to supporting South Carolina musicians. We stand for artistic expression and diversity in music. We recognize our roles as spokespersons in our respective communities, and therefore actively stand against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression.

This might just be what Charleston’s been waiting for. I’m going to give that sampler and listen and write up a little something about it. Stay tuned for Real South Records to start making moves in Charleston and beyond. In the meantime, check out their website, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
